How to Use This Converter

Step-by-step guide to get started

Pick the unit you're starting with, enter your value, then select the unit you want. The result is instant.

Some common situations where this comes in handy:

  • Cooking: A recipe calls for 8 oz of flour — enter 8 oz, convert to grams (≈ 227g)
  • Fitness: You weigh 165 lbs — convert to kilograms to fill in an international app (≈ 74.8 kg)
  • Shipping: Your package weighs 2.3 kg — convert to pounds for a US carrier (≈ 5.07 lbs)
  • Gems and jewellery: That stone is 0.5 carats — convert to milligrams (= 100 mg)

Quick Tip: Follow these steps in order for the best experience

How It Works

Understanding weight conversion formulas

Like most unit converters, this one works by converting everything to a common base unit first — in this case, grams — then converting from grams to the target unit. This keeps the math clean and avoids compounding errors.

The conversion factors come from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) definitions:

  • 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
  • 1 pound = 453.59237 grams (exact by definition)
  • 1 ounce = 28.349523125 grams (exact)
  • 1 stone = 6,350.29318 grams (14 pounds exactly)
  • 1 metric ton = 1,000,000 grams
  • 1 carat = 0.2 grams (exact metric definition)
  • 1 grain = 0.06479891 grams (exact)

Pounds and ounces use exact defined values, so there's no imprecision in those conversions — just normal floating-point rounding at the display level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about weight conversion

1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. A quick mental shortcut: multiply kg by 2.2 and you'll be within 0.2% of the exact answer. So 70 kg ≈ 154 lbs, 80 kg ≈ 176 lbs.

Divide by 2.205. So 150 lbs ÷ 2.205 ≈ 68 kg. Or multiply by 0.4536. The tool does this for you instantly — just enter your weight in pounds and switch the output unit to kilograms.

1 stone = 14 pounds = about 6.35 kg. Stones are mainly used in the UK and Ireland for body weight. So "12 stone" means 168 lbs or roughly 76 kg. Outside the UK you'll rarely encounter this unit.

1 ounce = 28.35 grams. So 100g ≈ 3.5 oz, and 500g ≈ 17.6 oz. For cooking, a rough rule: 30g ≈ 1 oz. This is the avoirdupois ounce used in cooking and everyday life, not the troy ounce used for precious metals.

A metric ton (tonne) = 1,000 kg = 2,204 lbs. A US short ton = 2,000 lbs = 907 kg. A UK long ton = 2,240 lbs = 1,016 kg. The metric ton is the one used internationally in trade and science. When in doubt, ask which ton is meant.

Yes. US carriers (USPS, FedEx domestic) typically use pounds; international carriers and most of the rest of the world use kilograms. Just enter your package weight in one and read off the other.

The conversion factors are the same ones used by NIST, so yes — they're precise to several decimal places. For pharmaceutical or analytical work, the limiting factor is your measurement instrument, not this converter.
