How to Use Social Media Counter

Step-by-step guide to get started

Select the platform from the dropdown — Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, or Threads. Then choose what you're writing (post, bio, caption, description). Type or paste your content and the counter shows your character count, how many you have left, and whether you're in the safe zone.

Color indicators:

Green (0–80% of limit): plenty of room. Yellow (80–95%): getting close, consider trimming. Orange (95–100%): right at the edge. Red (over 100%): over the limit, the platform will cut you off.

Platform quick reference:

Twitter (X): 280 per tweet, 160 for bio. Use 1–2 hashtags. Links count as 23 characters.

Instagram: 2,200 for captions, 150 for bio. First 125 chars show without clicking "more." 3–5 hashtags performs better than 30.

LinkedIn: 3,000 for posts. Posts around 300 characters tend to perform well for engagement, but longer thought-leadership posts also do well. 3–5 hashtags.

TikTok: 2,200 for captions, 80 for bio. Keep captions short and punchy — most viewers don't read long captions.

YouTube: 5,000 for descriptions. Put your most important info and any links in the first 157 characters — that's what shows in search.

Quick Tip: Follow these steps in order for the best experience

How Social Media Limits Work

Understanding platform constraints

How Social Media Character Counting Works

Platform Detection

The tool maintains a database of character limits for each platform and content type:

platforms = {
  twitter: { post: 280, bio: 160 },
  instagram: { caption: 2200, bio: 150 },
  facebook: { post: 63206, bio: 101 },
  linkedin: { post: 3000, article: 110000 },
  // ... etc
}

Character Counting Methods

1. Standard Characters: Uses JavaScript string.length

2. Emoji Handling: Some emojis count as 2 characters (surrogate pairs)

3. URL Detection: Twitter automatically shortens URLs to 23 characters

Visual Indicators

Color-coded feedback based on percentage of limit:

  • Green (0-80%): Safe zone, plenty of room
  • Yellow (80-95%): Approaching limit, consider editing
  • Orange (95-100%): At limit, proceed with caution
  • Red (>100%): Over limit, content will be truncated

Optimal Range Calculation

Each platform has research-backed optimal character ranges for best engagement. The tool highlights when your content falls within this "sweet spot".

Hashtag Analysis

The tool detects hashtags using regex pattern /#[\w]+/g and provides recommendations:

  • Twitter: 1-2 hashtags
  • Instagram: 3-5 hashtags (up to 30 allowed)
  • LinkedIn: 3-5 hashtags
  • TikTok: 3-5 hashtags

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions

Twitter (X) allows 280 characters per tweet. Links are automatically shortened to 23 characters by Twitter's t.co shortener, regardless of the actual URL length. Images, videos, and polls don't count toward your character limit.

Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters, but only about 125 characters (roughly two lines) are visible before the "...more" tap. Put your hook and most important information in the first two lines. Instagram bios are capped at 150 characters.

Facebook allows up to 63,206 characters, but shorter posts get more engagement. Posts of 40–80 characters perform best in terms of reactions and shares. If you have more to say, a short hook in the post with a link to the full content often works better than a wall of text.

Twitter: 1–2 hashtags. More than that tends to hurt engagement. Instagram: 3–5 works better than 20–30 for most accounts. LinkedIn: 3–5 relevant hashtags. TikTok: 3–5 hashtags. Facebook: use them sparingly, 1–2 at most. Quality over quantity — specific hashtags beat generic ones.

Most simple emojis count as one or two characters in our counter. Complex emojis — flags, emojis with skin tone modifiers, or ZWJ sequences — may count as more due to their Unicode encoding. This matches how most social platforms count them, but always glance at the platform's native counter before posting if you're right at the limit.
