How It Works

Understanding volume conversion formulas

Volume Conversion Formulas

Volume conversions cube the linear conversion factors. Our converter uses internationally recognized standards for precise calculations.

Key Formulas

Liters to US Gallons

Formula: gallons = liters × 0.264172

Example: 10 L = 10 × 0.264172 = 2.64172 gallons

US Gallons to Liters

Formula: liters = gallons × 3.78541

Example: 5 gallons = 5 × 3.78541 = 18.9271 liters

Milliliters to Fluid Ounces

Formula: fl oz = ml × 0.033814

Example: 250 ml = 250 × 0.033814 = 8.45 fl oz

Cups to Milliliters

Formula: ml = cups × 236.588

Example: 2 cups = 2 × 236.588 = 473.176 ml

Understanding Volume Units

Liter: Metric standard. 1L = 1 cubic decimeter = 1,000 cm³. Used worldwide for beverages, fuel, cooking.

US Gallon: 3.785 liters. Used in USA for fuel, milk, large volumes. Smaller than UK gallon.

UK Gallon: 4.546 liters. 20% larger than US gallon. Used in UK, Canada (older), some Commonwealth countries.

Milliliter: 1/1000 of a liter. Same as 1 cm³. Used for small volumes, medicine, cooking.

Practical Applications

  • Cooking & Baking: Recipe conversions, measuring ingredients
  • Automotive: Fuel consumption (MPG vs L/100km), oil capacity, coolant
  • Science & Lab: Experiment measurements, chemical solutions
  • Brewing: Beer/wine recipes, fermentation volumes
  • Pool & Spa: Water capacity, chemical dosing
  • Aquariums: Tank volume, water changes

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about volume conversion

US gallon: 1 gallon = 3.78541 liters. UK gallon: 1 gallon = 4.54609 liters. Most common is US gallon. So 5 US gallons = 18.93 L, 10 gallons = 37.85 L. For fuel: 10L = 2.64 US gallons. Always specify US or UK gallon!

Divide milliliters by 236.588. Formula: cups = ml ÷ 236.588. Example: 500 ml = 2.11 cups, 250 ml = 1.06 cups, 1000 ml = 4.23 cups. US cup = 236.588 ml exactly. Metric cup = 250 ml. Most recipes use US cups.

US gallon = 3.785 liters (smaller). UK gallon = 4.546 liters (larger). UK gallon is 20% bigger. Historical difference from different standards. When buying fuel: US uses US gallons, UK uses liters now (used to use UK gallons). Canada switched from UK to US gallons to liters.

1 liter = 33.814 US fluid ounces. So 1L bottle = about 34 fl oz, 500ml = 16.9 fl oz (standard water bottle), 2L = 67.6 fl oz. Note: US fluid ounce (29.57 ml) differs from UK fluid ounce (28.41 ml). We use US fl oz by default.

Formula: L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG. Example: 30 MPG = 7.84 L/100km, 40 MPG = 5.88 L/100km. Reverse: MPG = 235.214 ÷ L/100km. US uses MPG (miles per gallon), Europe/rest of world uses L/100km. Lower L/100km = better efficiency. Higher MPG = better.

1 US tablespoon = 14.7868 ml (≈ 15 ml), 1 US teaspoon = 4.92892 ml (≈ 5 ml). Ratio: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp. Metric: 1 tablespoon = 15 ml, 1 teaspoon = 5 ml exactly. For recipes: 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 237 ml.

Yes! Measure pool dimensions, calculate volume. Rectangular pool: length × width × depth (all in same units). Round pool: π × radius² × depth. Convert result to gallons or liters. Standard pool: 15,000-20,000 gallons (57,000-76,000 liters). Needed for chemical dosing, filter sizing.

1 cubic meter (m³) = 1,000 liters exactly. Also = 264.172 US gallons. Used for large volumes: water tanks, shipping containers, room air volume. Example: 5 m³ = 5,000 L = 1,321 gallons. For gas meters: 1 m³ = 35.315 cubic feet.
