How to Use This Converter

Step-by-step guide to get started

Enter an area value, select the source unit, and pick the target unit. That's it.

A few things worth knowing before you start:

  • Room sizes are usually in square feet (US) or square meters (most of the world). A typical bedroom is around 12 m² to 15 m², or 130–160 sq ft.
  • Property lots in the US are often in acres; internationally they're in hectares. One hectare ≈ 2.47 acres.
  • Flooring and paint quantities are calculated in square feet or square meters — know which one your supplier uses before ordering materials.

How It Works

Understanding area conversion formulas

Area conversions follow from length conversions, but with a twist: you square the linear factor. Since 1 meter = 3.28084 feet, then 1 square meter = 3.28084² = 10.7639 square feet. This catches people out sometimes — if a room doubles in length, its area quadruples, not doubles.

All conversions go through square meters as the base unit:

  • 1 square foot = 0.092903 m²
  • 1 acre = 4,046.86 m²
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (exactly)
  • 1 square mile = 2,589,988.11 m²
  • 1 square yard = 0.836127 m²

Hectares and square meters have a clean relationship (1 ha = 10,000 m²) because both are metric. The acre, by contrast, has a somewhat arbitrary historical origin — it was originally defined as the area a single ox could plow in a day. Today it's fixed at exactly 43,560 square feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about area conversion

1 square meter = 10.7639 square feet. So a 50 m² apartment is about 538 sq ft. The reason it's 10.76 and not 3.28 is that area conversions square the linear factor: (3.28084)² ≈ 10.76.

1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,047 m² = 0.4047 hectares. A useful mental image: it's roughly the size of an American football field without the end zones. Or think of it as a square about 209 feet (63.6 m) on each side.

A hectare is larger — 1 hectare = 2.471 acres. Hectares are metric (used internationally and in science), acres are imperial (mostly US, UK, and a few other countries). For farm land: 100 hectares ≈ 247 acres.

Multiply length by width. Both measurements need to be in the same unit — so if your room is 4.5 m × 3.2 m, the area is 14.4 m². If you measured in feet, you get square feet. Use this converter if you need to switch between the two.

It varies a lot by country. US homes average around 200–250 m² (2,150–2,700 sq ft). UK homes are much smaller — typically 85–95 m² (915–1,020 sq ft). European apartments range from 50–80 m². Small studio flats can be under 30 m².

Yes. Calculate your room area in square meters or square feet, convert if needed to match your supplier's units, then add 10% for waste when ordering flooring. For paint, roughly 1 litre covers 10–12 m², or 1 gallon covers around 350–400 sq ft.

1 square kilometer = 0.3861 square miles. So 10 km² ≈ 3.86 sq mi. Going the other way: 1 square mile = 2.59 km². City areas and national parks are often described in km², while US land is commonly in square miles.
